Doordarshan being the Indian Public Service Broadcaster, is having the mandate of Informing, Educating and Entertaining the public. It is one of the largest broadcasting networks in the world in terms of having 67 Studios, 1416 Transmitters of HPTs, and LPTs and the largest terrestrial network in the world
Doordarshan had a humble beginning on 15th September 1959 as experimental telecast on that day as Black & White transmission had grown gradually, expanding its transmission hours and expanding its network from time to time.
Colour Television Broadcasting was started on 15th August 1982, when the Asian Games 1982 were held in India. Since then, the DD network had grown across the length and breadth of the country covering 92% of the Indian population, achieving many milestones in its existence.
Today, DD family has 29 satellite channels (24 hours) including DD-National, DD-News, DD-Bharati, DD-Urdu and 13 other Regional Language Satellite Channels (RLSS) which caters programs of interests of a particular state in the language and idiom of that region.
Doordarshan’s DD FREE DISH DTH Service
Doordarshan’s Free to Air (FTA) Direct To Home Service with the brand name DD-DIRECT PLUS was launched in DECEMBER 2004 and was inaugurated by the then Prime Minister Dr.Manmohan Singh. Initially, started with 33 channels in its bouquet of DTH service was later rechristened as DD-FREE DISH and the number of channels also increased to 64 TV Channels and 24 Radio Channels.
DD FREE DISH is available in Ku Band on INSAT-4B (93.5 Deg.E) having 4 streams of channels with Downlink frequencies -10990 MHz, 11070 MHz, 11150 MHz, and 11570 MHz. Symbol Rate: 28500Msps
This Ku-Band DTH service provides TV coverage throughout the Indian territory ( except Andaman & Nicobar islands) DTH Signals can be received through a small-sized ( 60 c.m.) dish and associated Set-Top-Box (STB) system.
The exclusive TV Channel for the benefits farmers was launched on 26th May 2016 by the Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi with the channel name as DD-KISAN, dedicated to farmers and the channel provides information about best Agricultural practices, expert views, farming techniques, water conservation, organic farming, etc. and the channel has been well-received by the farming community.
About DD Podhigai
DD-Podhigai is the Tamil Regional Channel of Doordarshan’s family of 13 Regional Channels.
The name “PODHIGAI” signifies the gentle, serene and pleasant breeze which emanates from the southern direction of Podhigai mountain and passes through the Western Ranges of Tamilnadu.
Doordarshan Kendra, Chennai was inaugurated on 15th August 1975. Of all the Southern Regional Kendra, Doordarshan Kendra, Chennai is the first regional Kendra to come up in the southern part of India.
The journey of Doordarshan Kendra, Chennai started in 1975 had seen many milestones in its long history, has grown strength to strength, acquiring new technical capabilities from time to time.
Starting with two hours of Regional Transmission at the time of inception had gradually increased its transmission time and in 1993, Regional Language Satellite Channel (DD-5) commenced. The 24 hours Tamil Regional Satellite Channel with the name christened as “PODHIGAI TV” commenced on 15th January 2000, the “PONGAL DAY”
Today, Doordarshan Kendra, Chennai has the facility of four Studios with the state of the art digital equipment, two OB Vans ( one HD OB Van & one SD OB Van) and post-production facilities in HD working environment also.
It has launched its Terrestrial Transmission on 15th August 1975. The Channel launched an assortment of interesting and useful programs catering to Farmers, Industrial Workers, Students, Children, etc. There were some entertainment programs like Film Songs, Feature Films, Plays, etc. to entertain General Public.

Chennai Doordarshan devised its programs without copying any other channel and made the viewers spellbound through its variety of informative, educative and entertaining programs.
When popular programs of Chennai Doordarshan were on Air like a feature film or film songs, you could notice empty streets as people thronged to television sets at home, at neighboring houses, television shops, etc.
In the initial stages, the Terrestrial Transmission of Chennai Doordarshan could reach only a short distance from its origin. To make other parts of Tamil Nadu view Chennai Doordarshan's programs technology was utilized. High Power Transmitters and Low Power Transmitters were installed at vantage locations and the transmission reach was expanded to the entire area of Tamil Nadu.
Then came the Satellite Technology. Doordarshan's Regional Language Satellite Channel Podhigai was started and the programs were received not only in India but also by many foreign countries.
The growth of Satellite Technology resulted in the advent of many Private Channels. Though Chennai Doordarshan lost its dominance and monopoly, it can take pride from the fact that many of the programs devised and telecast by the Private Channels were based on the programs already telecast on Chennai Doordarshan.
In spite of stiff competition, DD Podhigai continues to command respect and confidence among the Tamil people all over the world because of DD Podhigai's socially relevant and dignified programs, not employing the negative tactics used by some of the other Private Channels to increase their TRP in their struggle to earn money.
DD Podhigai continues to be a people's channel, as the programs of DD Podhigai cater to all walks of society be it a farmer, industrial worker, student or general public.
